Automatic Garage Doors. Garage doors can be automated either at the point of the initial installation or retrospectively. Fully retractable up & over garage doors, sectional garage doors and side hinged garage doors can be automated without any major conversion to their lifting mechanism. The majority of double sized garage doors are ready to have an electric garage door opener installed. Insulated roller shutter garage doors are nearly always automated when they are fitted, as they are not normally sprung, so the electric motor is the only means of lifting them. Canopy garage doors present the biggest problems for automation. Whilst many devices, such as bow arms, have been invented to overcome the problems of automating canopy garage doors, as a company we feel that it is better in most circumstances, to remove the existing canopy lifting gear and re-hanging the existing garage door panel with new, fully retractable lifting gear. The main problem with automating canopy garage doors is the conflict in the direction of travel with the electric garage door opener. With canopy garage doors, the main area of movement is vertically up and down the side posts, whereas the electric garage door opener moves horizontally from the front towards the rear of the garage. This conflict often results in the garage door not opening fully.
